Kazakhstan Photo Blogs Aksai Gorge Written by Stephen on October 31, 2010 The Aksai Gorge, a short drive outside of Almaty, offers a quick and easy way to get out of the city for a few days. Set-up through an eco-tour outfit in Almaty itself, I did a homestay for two nights with a Kazakh family who live just outside the Gorge. While the first day was a bit rainy, the second saw full on snow the whole way to the Russian Orthodox monastery at the top of the Gorge. Wildlife sighting outside the monastery gates. Front gate of the monastery, with Orthodox Cross. Monastery base-camp, with daily chores set aside. Don't judge the beanie. It was a loaner from the homestay family. I have a much more epic hat that I left with my stuff in Almaty. Finally, the monastery itself. Russian Orthodox Monastery, high in the mountains surrounding Almaty.
