I left Siem Reap with a good idea of where I wanted to go but a weak knowledge of how exactly to get there. Armed with only a vague plan and a phone number written on a scrap of paper, I got in a truck to Anlong Veng.
I couldn’t find a public phone, so the scrap of paper was only that. Luckily, a young guy who had spent some time studying English approached me while I was reading on the balcony of my guesthouse.
Sak Aoong Nonn and I discussed a plan to get to Preah Vihear, Koh Ker, and Beng Melea. To kill the rest of the day, we drove around town for a while and then he invited me to drop my his house to meet his family. I was too self-conscious to take pictures while I was there, but he did get one of me helping to mix up spices for their dinner.
After that just wandered around town for a while, caught the best sunset I’ve seen in ages, and then went home to get some sleep before my 6am wake-up the next day!
It turned out, later, that Sok was indeed the man I intended to call. My friend Tory had been through the area months before, but Sok managed to find me even after I failed to call him.
