Visiting the Carslberg Brewery in Copenhagen

I may not have mentioned this before, but I’m a big fan of beer. How, therefore, to spend twelve days in Copenhagen without at some point stumbling upon the Carlsberg brewery? Its probably the best beer in town, after all.

In another edition of “Good Things Beer Has Done For The World”, CARL JACOBSON and the Carlsberg Group have long been heavy investors in the cultural and urban development of Copenhagen. To really get a feel for it, to see it yourself, a visit to the Carlsberg Experience is a must on your Ultimate Copenhagen Itinerary.

Aside from a show of all their own philanthropic aims, though, the Carlsberg Experience also highlights the history of Carlsberg’s operations. For example, did you know that the original Carlsberg not only got room and board but ALSO a daily beer ration of 4L? That’s over a gallon of beer per day as part of your wages! Probably the best job in town.

Not to be outdone by fraternity houses everywhere, though, Carlsberg also hold the single largest collection of different beer bottles in the world.

There seemed to be about 100 different ‘types’ of Carlsberg in there, but the point remains the same: this is a lot of beer.

After wandering the grounds and admiring the horses (which, let’s be honest, is the ONE category where international beers have trouble beating Budweiser), sit outside and enjoy your two free beers (included in the cost of the tour) in the beautiful cobbled open space between the visitors’ center and old brewery.

Bonus points if you brought a board game along!

If not, though, keep an eye out for the Carlsberg Horse Cart coming home from its daily tour of the city.

Before leaving, check out the gift shop for an excellent selection of Carlsberg’s specialty line of Jacobson beers. The Red Velvet beer was so palatable that even my non-beer-drinking friend was taken with it. Even beyond the visitor’s center and tour, be sure to take some time to walk around the grounds of Carlsberg’s modern operations for some beautiful architecture and photo opportunities.

The Carlsberg Experience is open from 10a – 5p Tuesday through Sunday. The cost is 70 DKR per person, which includes the self-guided tour and two beers at the bars located on brewery grounds.
