Crete E4: Road Walking
I woke up on Day 5 of my hike across the Crete E4 to a beautiful view down the Cha Gorge and a delicious breakfast of oranges and chocolate on toast. After a delicious start, my path descended down towards the Gorge and past wooded copses of trees hiding small Greek Orthodox chapels.
Much of the way along the Cha gorge is beautiful, a rock-strewn single track with views down the canyon and eventually to the sea past the lowland villages at the foot of the mountains.
Aaaand, then the road again.
That’s about when I’d had enough. After days on end (5, to be precise) of a couple hours’ beautiful trails and the rest of the day on roads of varying quality, I decided to ditch my cross-island trek and head back to Kyle’s house in Chania to regroup and start over.
Because when you start taking angry self-portraits in the middle of a public road, its time to re-evaluate your choices. At the little village of Kato Chorio, smelling of trail and tired of tarmac trudging, I caught a bus back to the northwest of Crete.
