The heart of Washington D.C. The center of the Smithsonian Museums, the Washington Monument, the US Capitol building where Congress meets, and so many of the most important monuments and government buildings in the country. It’s the center of the city for all things touristic, and it’s certain to feature heavily in your Washington D.C. itinerary.
Whether you’re visiting D.C. to play it up as a tourist, work that office drone lifestyle, or even to attend a Presidential Inauguration, you will pass through this area a fair few times.
I challenge you to go to D.C. and try to somehow avoid the Washington Monument. Its all over, and shows up from just about anywhere in the National Mall area. I did what I could, while walking around this monumental focal point, but despite my best efforts it still showed up more often than not. Hopefully on this little virtual stroll through touristy D.C., it isn’t too overwhelming!
The whole National Mall area, it seems, is about memorial and monumental remembrance.Which, given the scope of fighting and loss the US has seen in its short history, is only fair. The whole area, at least once you get a little removed from the big tourist draws, is green and peaceful and a great place to wander.Or to, *ahem*, reflect on the past.Especially while considering some of the losses we’ve seen in global wars over the years. Some spots, like the Constitution garden, are idyllic landscaping and peaceful views, with just a touch of history thrown in.And at night, with the crowds gone and little traffic, a sort of profoundly reverent feeling abounds. So, check out your National Mall when you make it to D.C.Museums, pretty outdoor spaces, and of course that always-present monument are waiting!
