You know what gets better with age? Yes, wine, of course; but what else?
Sandcastles.
You thought you were the big dude on the beach back in 5th grade? Well, check out these.
Located on Ofelia beach, a tiny peninsula of construction in the NyHavn area of Copenhagen that juts out into the waterways, the Copenhagen Sandsculpture Festival was a most excellent surprise to come across on a wander through town.
Some of the sculptures were appropriately appropriate, like the Little Mermaid which replicated the famous statue just down the water that Copenhagen is so known for.
Others were inappropriately inappropriate, at least to Bible Belt American sensibilities, like the Russian presentation of “Fertility and Diversity”.
“From the Bible” ?? Must have been in that part of Numbers I skipped over.
Inappropriate seeming mostly because it directly faced the childrens’ play area. Don’t worry, I managed to restrain myself from getting in that sand and trying to build my own.
Mostly, though, the sculptures were just all sorts of awesome.
Even a week later, when I finally got around to taking that Canal Tour, there were still folks wandering over the beach marveling at the coolest sand art I’ve ever seen.
