Preah Vihear Temple, in northern Cambodia, is one of the places Tori highly recommended when we were talking about where I should go while I was here. Sak and I headed out early from Anlong Veng towards the temple.
On getting to the base of the mountain where the temple is, I had to switch drivers because the moto we were on wasnt strong enough to make it up the steep path. On the way up, we passed all kinds of Cambodian Army barracks, training grounds, pillboxes, and sandbag bunkers. As recently as two years ago, there was fighting at the border just south of the temple with the Thai army. While the situation has since calmed down, the temple is still overrun with on-duty soldiers.
The temple itself is five complex stacked above each other up a big hill, and at the end is a high cliff overlooking lowland Cambodia and the border with Thailand. Even more than Angkor, the intricacy of the temple combined with the natural beauty of the site itself made for a place that it was difficult to convince myself to leave.
Hehe I am really the first comment to your amazing post?!
