The Salzburg Mozart House Museum

Austria has a long history of famous musicians and composers and creative types, but in the city of Salzburg none of these are nearly as famous as little Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756, and his early works were composed and played here until he left the city in 1777 for Paris and eventually Vienna. Though it was in Vienna where Mozart found his greatest fame, the city of Salzburg still celebrates him as the most famous native son.

I happened to be in Salzburg during exceedingly dreary weather, and for days like this the Mozart Residence Museum makes for a decent way to spend a few hours. The museum isn’t especially large, but the space is crammed with an extremely broad array of information and artifacts regarding Mozart’s life both in Salzburg and after. I probably spent two hours in the place, thoroughly reading everything. If you were in a hurry, you could skip through in 30 or 40 minutes without a problem.

The Salzburg Mozart House Museum is on Makartplatz, very close to both the center of town and the riverfront. The Mozart Residence is open from 9a – 5:30p year-round, later during the summer months. Admission is 10 Euro for adults, or free for holders of the Salzburg Card. For the museum itself there is very little reason to take a guided tour, but if you plan to visit a number of museums in Salzburg then that City Card is actually a good value. Otherwise, a combined ticket to the Mozart Residence and Mozart Birth House is 17 Euro. Discounts are available for groups and for children. 

Note that the Mozart Residence is heavy on reading and light on interaction, so it may not be a good choice for those traveling with young children.
