Shakhrisabz: Home Sweet Home (R)

Not for me.  For Timur.

Shakrisabz’s greatest claim to fame is being the home of Amir Timur, the man who conquered an empire stretching from Western China to Eastern Turkey.
To celebrate this fact, every wedding in town seems to stop by Timur’s statue for a bit of photography.
Though some of the buildings are now merely ruins, the sheer scale of them lends creedence to the claim that Shakrisabz was once an even more incredible city than Samarkand.
The city is also, as seems typical in Uzbekistan, full of friendly people. I think this one turned out nicely.
Also an stop on the Silk Road, Shakrisabz has a few preserved Caravansaries (hotels to house merchants and their animals).

Though just a daytrip from Samarkand for me, Shakrisabz was an interesting look into the home of the might Amir Timur.  I feel like I’ve learned far more about Central Asian history in one week in Uzbekistan than in the 23 years before.
