I know this a bit weird, but I really like visiting cemeteries. Something about the monumental aspects of them, the air of quiet contemplation, and the bounteous living greenness of a space devoted to death all appeal to me.
In Vienna, then, how could I avoid the two historic cemeteries (Vienna Central Cemetery and St. Marx cemetery) full of former famous Viennese?
Beyond the “famous folk” section (32a), the veterans memorial behind the main church was also quite attractively presented.
So, yea, maybe the friends I talked with that night back at the hostel were a little creeped out by my day’s choice of activities. Totally worth it, though, to spend a few hours walking around in such a great public space.
